How to upcycle a mirror with WoodUbend
During these days in lockdown we all have found ourselves looking to start new projects to keep our sanity. If you are a little like me and dedicate a lot of time to your work, you know we tend to neglect our homes. So, these long days are giving us the perfect opportunity to turn our eyes back home and finally tackle our long upcycling project list.
Upcycling a plain old mirror makes an easy and fun indoor project that will add so much character to any room.
This past week I finished my French Chateau themed mirror. This mirror is the start of my hall makeover and I plan to place it over a console table.
After a little research, I found that detailed and embellished mirrors like the one I was envisioning can cost from £500. Today I am going to show you how to upcycle a mirror with Woodubend Mouldings and Dixie Belle Paint for a lot less.
I purchased a simple mirror for £2 at a charity shop, cleaned it up, and taped up the inside of the mirror. Then I placed all my mouldings on top and tried different design variations until I found one that I thought matched my vision of a French Chateau. I took a picture that I can go back to in case I forgot how it looked and started warming up my mouldings on a griddle.
The next step was to start adding the mouldings to the frame of the mirror. I first added TR009 trim all around the frame. When warm, Woodubend mouldings are very easy to cut with a crafting knife or scissors, so try to cut the corners in a 45 degree angle to be able to create a seamless joint. But do not fear, if the joint is not perfect just warm up the moulding again and stretch or move it to get the desired finish.
To adhere the trim to the frame I used wood glue. Always use wood glue to adhere the mouldings, the kind of glue that is made exclusively for wood. Avoid the general-purpose glues that also work on stone, glass, or plastic.
I usually put glue on either the surface I am working with or the moulding. However, since this mirror frame has a very stiff curve, I found it best to put glue on both sides for extra security.
When it is time to start layering the other mouldings on top of the trim, pre-paint the back and all the little nooks and crannies of your mouldings. This will keep the original color of the mouldings from reflecting on the mirror when you start adding them to the frame.
When I was done layering on my mouldings, it was time for paint. I blended some of my favorite Dixie Belle Paints: Savannah Mist, Drift Wood, and Vintage Duck Egg. I added Dixie Belle’s Sea Spray to add texture to the paint especially because the texture is ideal to cover any visible gaps between the mouldings and the frame.
I am incredibly happy with the end results. It is hard to believe how cheap it was to upcycle a simple mirror by adding Woodubend mouldings. You might think that adding so many pieces of moulding would make this an expensive project. Not so, and it is still a several hundred pounds cheaper!
